Donald Trump claims Russia could have captured Kyiv in just four hours if one Russian general hadn't made a disastrous turn into rain-soaked farmland. But Russian battlefield communications from the first day of the invasion tell a very different story—and the historical weather records directly challenge Trump's explanation.

In this special fact-check, Greg Terry examines Russian military communications describing devastating losses, Ukrainian ambushes, and defenders who were ready for the invasion. Then we investigate the actual weather around Kyiv before February 24, 2022. The analysis presented in this video shows ZERO recorded precipitation on February 23 and just 5.3 millimeters across the preceding ten days. That's nowhere near the historic rainfall Trump describes.

We break down Trump's claims about Russian tank speeds, the supposedly disastrous turn off the highway, and the assertion that unusually heavy rain prevented Russia from taking Kyiv. Using daily precipitation records, historical rainfall comparisons, and temperature data, we examine whether the weather supports his story.

And the evidence goes far beyond rainfall. Ukraine's resistance, the failed Russian air assault at Hostomel, battlefield ambushes, artillery, and Russian command and logistical failures all mattered. This wasn't simply a story about mud or one general's mistake. It was a Russian invasion that encountered determined Ukrainian defenders—and an explanation from Trump that fails to account for what actually happened.

Today, the biggest news comes from the Lyman direction.

Although the frontline around Lyman has barely moved, the intensity of the fighting has reached extraordinary levels. Russian forces are committing thousands of soldiers to repeated counterattacks in an effort to halt Ukrainian advances and restore their positions, but these assaults are coming at a tremendous cost. In Zarichne, Russian troops are attempting to push back Ukrainian infiltrators who are trying to cross the Zherebets River and advance into the centre of Torske. Meanwhile, in the forests east of Lyman, Ukrainian forces are clearing the remaining Russian positions north of Yampil. Russian troops are still present in the area, but their positions have become increasingly scattered, leaving them struggling to maintain a coherent bridgehead. Russia is also counterattacking inside Yampil itself, attempting to regain control of positions in the grey zone. Their objective is to reopen access to the vast forested areas beyond these positions, where Ukrainian forces could otherwise exploit gaps in Russian defences. These repeated attacks and counterattacks have gradually pushed the frontline towards a more stable position along the river, but that stability has come at a staggering human cost for the Russians.

At the end of September and the beginning of October, Russian forces suffered daily personnel losses exceeding two thousand on three separate occasions. On one of those days, reported losses reached two thousand and ninety, the highest daily figure since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion. These losses reflect the intensity of Russia’s efforts to contain the Ukrainian counterattacks, as commanders continue sending troops into contested areas to prevent further advances and recover lost positions. 

This is largely because Ukrainian forces eliminated Russia’s drone operators and specialist personnel during Operation Vivaldi. A notable part of the operation involved Ukrainian drone operators using unmanned ground vehicles to reach Russian positions in the rear. These ground drones were used to strike concealed Russian shelters, command posts, and locations where Russian forces were concentrating and launching drones. The third Assault Brigade said these strikes destroyed a large number of such positions, along with the personnel operating from them. With fewer experienced drone operators and other specialized personnel available to support the frontline, Russia has increasingly had to compensate by committing large numbers of conventional troops to plug gaps, reinforce threatened positions, and launch repeated counterattacks. As a result, Russia is committing a significant portion of its available reserves simply to slow the Ukrainian advance and temporarily stabilize the frontline. This may prevent a total collapse of the Russian line, but it also means that large numbers of troops are being consumed just to maintain the current defensive line rather than being preserved for future operations.

This could be exactly what Ukraine was planning from the beginning, as proven by the commander of the Third Army Corps. Andriy Biletsky said that the Russian prisoners of war were lucky to have surrendered early, because the next stage of the operation will make the situation a lot worse for Russians. Based on his remarks, it is highly likely that the Ukrainian commanders anticipated that the Russians would launch massive meat wave attacks once the scope of Ukraine's counterattack became clear. As a result of these preparation, the Russians were walking straight into a trap, leading to their massive losses. 

Overall, the key issue is that Russia may be stabilizing the frontline while simultaneously exhausting the forces needed to hold it. By forcing Russia to commit more troops just to contain a limited area, Ukraine can turn every counterattack into a drain on Russia’s remaining combat power rather than simply fighting for territory. If Ukrainian commanders anticipated this response, the objective may have been not only to advance, but to provoke Russia into spending its reserves under increasingly unfavorable conditions. In that case, the real significance of the operation will be measured not by how far the frontline moves today, but by how much weaker Russia becomes when Ukraine launches its next phase.

Trump says Russia will supply hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel immediately, with additional deliveries planned. The U.S. Treasury has also authorized Russian diesel transactions through April 7, 2027. Today, the biggest news is coming from the Dnipropetrovsk direction. 

Here, the secret Ukrainian counteroffensive has been underway and making rapid gains in the southeast. With Russians desperately trying to keep Ukrainian successes quiet, a complete informational blackout is in place from both sides, with only the slightest hints at the true scale of the situation on the frontline. 

Most notably, three significant Ukrainian advances have been confirmed in this sector. The first, Ukrainians have fully cleared the grey zone after Russians reinfiltrated following past Ukrainian successes here. Second, Ukrainians have fully liberated the town and the approaches of Shevchenko, securing Ukrainian gains made earlier this year in the now-rear. Lastly and most significantly, Ukrainians have pushed back Russian lines in the center, and made a breakthrough into the Russian staging ground of Komar itself. Crossing the Mokri Yaly River, Ukrainians now have a foothold across it within a built up settlement. Komar is the largest town along this river, and in turn has served as an important Russian staging ground for their past offensives toward the Vovcha River earlier this year. The other towns are too small and have too little intact for Russians to stage any meaningful forces and logistics there. Ukrainians managing to break into this town has therefore cut a major advantage out from under the Russian force grouping in the area. 

What this now means is that supplies and reinforcements have to be stored and transported all the way from Velika Novosilka to the Russian frontline. This trip spans seventeen kilometers or ten miles along a route well within Ukrainian drones’ operating range. Ukrainians in turn experience much easier logistics here. The Ukrainian river crossings to the west are surrounded by forests that provide cover, both for storage and transport across the water. Additionally, while Russians trying to avoid the main roads are forced through open fields, the fields on the Ukrainian side are covered with tree farms. This means much more hardened roads able to bare the weight of heavy equipment, along with a huge amount of concealment to store supplies and soldiers extremely close to the frontline. 

Looking back at the situation on the ground, there is no clear information on the state of the ongoing battles for Komar. However, Russian high command has recently found it necessary to release footage of several flag planting videos within the southern part of the town alone. As Russian commanders mainly rely on these flag planting videos as damage control in the media space, it is good to say that the situation for Russian forces in Komar is less than ideal. In turn, Ukrainians have released footage showing a massive series of airstrikes hitting Russian force concentrations and logistics depots in the town of Velyka Novosilka. As these GBU thirty-nine glide bombs are GPS guided, and all six of them seem to have it large intact buildings directly, it is highly likely that Ukrainians are conducting full air strike barrages on Russian strongpoints in the town. 

Overall, Ukrainians have made a significantly important step in the process of pushing Russians back in the southeastern sector at Komar. Crossing the River into the town itself puts Russian logistics under immense pressure through deep Ukrainian fire control and extremely disadvantageous terrain. These disadvantages are becoming worse as autumn rains arrive on the front, further restricting Russian maneuverability. If Ukrainians manage to keep up their pressure, Russians lines will continue to be pushed further back, and reduces any Russian hope of regaining a presence in the Dnipropetrovsk region to zero.

Finally, civil liberties have been systematically eradicated, where peaceful protests over economic conditions or basic human rights are met with violent crackdowns by security apparatuses, mass arrests, and harsh judicial sentences, trapping the populace under an atmosphere of constant surveillance and state intimidation.

This expanding conflict is rippling across neighboring flashpoints, drawing in security spillover from Iraq and Israel while testing the endurance of Saudi Arabia and the IRGC.
