Donald Trump claims Russia could have captured Kyiv in just four hours if one Russian general hadn't made a disastrous turn into rain-soaked farmland. But Russian battlefield communications from the first day of the invasion tell a very different story—and the historical weather records directly challenge Trump's explanation.

In this special fact-check, Greg Terry examines Russian military communications describing devastating losses, Ukrainian ambushes, and defenders who were ready for the invasion. Then we investigate the actual weather around Kyiv before February 24, 2022. The analysis presented in this video shows ZERO recorded precipitation on February 23 and just 5.3 millimeters across the preceding ten days. That's nowhere near the historic rainfall Trump describes.

We break down Trump's claims about Russian tank speeds, the supposedly disastrous turn off the highway, and the assertion that unusually heavy rain prevented Russia from taking Kyiv. Using daily precipitation records, historical rainfall comparisons, and temperature data, we examine whether the weather supports his story.

And the evidence goes far beyond rainfall. Ukraine's resistance, the failed Russian air assault at Hostomel, battlefield ambushes, artillery, and Russian command and logistical failures all mattered. This wasn't simply a story about mud or one general's mistake. It was a Russian invasion that encountered determined Ukrainian defenders—and an explanation from Trump that fails to account for what actually happened.

I also break down reported strikes on the Samara oil-pumping and petrochemical complex, the Lukoil Volgograd refinery, and facilities in Voronezh, Nizhny Novgorod, Krasnodar, and elsewhere. I examine the extraordinary night of October 14, 2026, when Ukrainian drones reportedly surged toward Moscow and Russian infrastructure while Russia launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 attack drones and loitering munitions against Kyiv. Moscow’s mayor said nearly 500 drones were headed toward the capital; reported targets included an oil depot in Belgorod, the Novoshakhtinsk refinery, and Sberbank’s Balakovo data center.

The more consequential failure came over Kyiv. Ukrainian officials said they received no allied warning before the first ballistic-missile wave, though alerts reportedly arrived for later waves. With 35 of 39 missiles getting through, strikes damaged power and oil-and-gas facilities, caused blackouts and water disruptions, and underscored Ukraine’s interceptor shortage. I also assess reports that Starshield terminals lost connectivity above 160 km/h, disrupting Ukrainian missions, while separating confirmed restrictions from speculation about their cause. The strategic issue is whether degraded warning, air defense, and connectivity are creating exploitable gaps for Russia.
