The moral stakes are grave as Russia continues its war against Ukraine, but the practical fuel-price claim also collapses under scrutiny. At roughly 491,000 metric tons of U.S. diesel consumption per day, the initial 300,000-ton volume would equal only about 14 to 15 hours of American supply—even if it could be delivered directly to the United States.

I also walk through the 2022 Ending Importation of Russian Oil Act, which bars direct imports of Russian energy unless strict conditions are met, and the reported temporary OFAC license allowing supply to the global market. Ukrainian strikes have reportedly damaged Russian refineries, storage sites, and export infrastructure, raising further questions about Moscow’s available diesel capacity. This is why I see the announcement as politically consequential and morally appalling, yet unlikely to materially change U.S. diesel prices or Russia’s war economy.

Ukraine had another strong night, striking Russian airfields, energy infrastructure, air defenses, and logistics targets across occupied Crimea and inside Russia. At least seven Russian aircraft were reportedly destroyed or damaged after strikes on hangars at Saki and Hvartsky airfields, while Crimea’s power grid, the Feodosia oil terminal, and Belgorod energy infrastructure also came under pressure. Russia is still hitting Ukrainian civilians hard, including the deadly aftermath in Kyiv and a strike on a swimming pool in Zaporizhia, but Ukraine’s deep-strike campaign is increasingly showing Russia that the war can come home in many forms.

Russia moved much of its Black Sea Fleet away from Crimea because Novorossiysk was supposed to be the safer refuge. Overnight, Ukraine demonstrated that the refuge itself is vulnerable. Ukrainian forces launched a large combined attack involving jet-powered drones, Neptune missiles, and unmanned naval systems against Novorossiysk, with confirmed hits reported on air-defense positions, piers, and port infrastructure. Russia’s defenses were heavily active, fires broke out around the port, and two major grain terminals suspended operations after sustaining damage. The strategic question is bigger than what burned overnight: if Russia’s fleet is increasingly confined to its bases and Ukraine can now reach the infrastructure surrounding its principal Black Sea stronghold, how safe is the fleet really? I also examine Russia’s overnight strikes across Ukraine, increasingly sophisticated drone countermeasures, the latest battlefield numbers, and what the fighting tells us about the direction of the war.

I examine Germany’s announcement that it will urgently transfer PAC-2 Patriot interceptors from national stocks and pursue contracts for roughly 1,000 Patriot missiles for Ukraine through an EU-backed loan. With winter approaching and Russian ballistic-missile and drone attacks intensifying, this is more than another aid pledge: it could directly affect Ukraine’s ability to protect cities, energy infrastructure, and civilian life. Germany is also increasing AIM-9 deliveries, while Ukraine seeks additional IRIS-T missiles and Britain, France, Italy, and other partners pursue further air-defense support.

I also look at the strategic political context behind this decision: the AfD’s electoral rise, migration and economic pressures inside Germany, Kyiv’s talks with Trump’s envoys, and Kremlin messaging around possible trilateral negotiations. Ukraine had a remarkable night across multiple fronts. Ukrainian long-range drones struck the Feodosia oil storage facility in occupied Crimea yet again, continuing a campaign that has steadily reduced the site's fuel storage capacity. Another strike hit energy infrastructure in Krasnodar Krai, while drones also damaged a shadow fleet oil tanker preparing for loading operations. In one of the night's most significant developments, Ukrainian forces reportedly struck two Tu-142 strategic bombers and destroyed an Iskander launcher. Meanwhile, Russia launched nearly 300 drones and missiles against Ukraine, but Ukrainian air defenses intercepted more than 95% of incoming threats. On the battlefield, Russian forces suffered approximately 1,430 personnel losses, 70 artillery systems destroyed, and a record-setting 483 vehicles and fuel tankers eliminated in a single day, all while failing to achieve confirmed territorial gains. The fighting reached 291 combat engagements, among the highest levels seen in recent months, suggesting Russia's offensive pressure remains intense but increasingly costly. The night also highlighted Ukraine's resilience as damaged infrastructure and businesses resumed operations only days after Russian strikes.

For nearly four years, Greg Terry and I have worked together to help Ukrainians affected by Russia’s full-scale invasion. What began with a simple effort to get medical supplies into Ukraine grew into support for humanitarian needs, armored ambulances and vehicles, reconnaissance drones, and Ukrainian defenders.

Now we are launching something new: Ukraine Support Bridge.

The idea is simple. Ukraine Support Bridge does not collect your donations. It provides one trusted place where you can see verified needs, follow the progress, and give directly to the organizations and people responsible for each project. The money does not pass through Greg or me. Each donation link takes you directly to the appropriate destination.

Our first three projects represent three different groups profoundly affected by this war.

The first is Sava, a deaf Ukrainian boy whose mother serves in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Sava needs cochlear implant surgery that could allow him to hear. The goal is $31,000, with donations going directly through our Ukrainian and American charitable partners.

The second is M, a Ukrainian teenager who fled Ukraine at the beginning of the full-scale invasion. She earned a full-tuition refugee scholarship to attend college in the United States, but that scholarship does not cover room and board. Her remaining need is approximately $12,000 for this year. Because her U.S. immigration paperwork remains in process, we are protecting her identity publicly. I know M and her adopted family personally, and I am personally vouching for this fundraiser.

The third is Project Constantine, which is helping equip Ukrainian frontline brigades with vehicles, communications equipment, power systems, optics, night vision, and other critical equipment. Donations through Ukraine Support Bridge go directly to Project Constantine.

These needs can look enormous when we see the total. But they become much more achievable when thousands of us participate. As Greg points out in this video, even a $219,000 combined need represents 8,760 people giving $25.

I examine reports that Russian Major General Anton Grunas, commander of the 4th Separate Motor Rifle Brigade, was killed in occupied Donetsk Oblast on September 12. Grunas had personally briefed Vladimir Putin on Russia’s claimed capture of Konstantinovka and received the Gold Star Hero of Russia less than three weeks before his reported death. Yet available battlefield maps do not support a full Russian capture of the city. I assess what this episode says about propaganda, command vulnerability, and Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces.

I also cover Ukraine’s reported strike on an Su-24 at Saki airfield in occupied Crimea, the reported shutdown of the Kirishi refinery and reduced output at other major diesel facilities, and damage to a warehouse beside Taganrog’s Atlant Aero drone producer. On the ground, I review Operation Vivaldi north of Lyman, where Ukraine’s Third Army Corps reports clearing 75 square kilometers and pressuring a Russian salient.

Ukraine is hitting Russian oil refineries as Zelensky prepares to meet Trump—and I explain why those strikes are a bargaining chip Ukraine cannot afford to surrender without something in return.

I examine Ukraine’s reported strikes on the Kuibyshev and Ufa refineries, reports that Moscow’s refinery has halted crude processing after an earlier attack, and Ukrainian strikes targeting Russia’s drone infrastructure. The strategic question is straightforward: why should Ukraine stop hitting Russian refineries while Russia continues attacking Ukraine’s electricity and energy supplies?

I also cover Russia’s overnight attacks, the reported destruction of a Ukrainian oil and gas facility, power outages ahead of winter, and the latest battlefield developments. I distinguish reported damage from uncertain estimates—including the claim about how much Russian refining capacity is offline.

Finally, I discuss drone warfare, an unconfirmed report of strikes on Russian FSB sites, and the former Russian mayor whose journey from a bribery conviction to the battlefield offers a grim illustration of this war.

My argument: any agreement to halt attacks on energy infrastructure must protect Ukraine’s energy system too. Pressure on Zelensky alone will not accomplish that.

I examine an extraordinary October 5 battlefield tally: 727 Russian vehicles and fuel tanks reported destroyed, 2,020 Russian personnel losses, 4,687 total targets struck, and 637 Russian troops reportedly hit by Ukraine’s unmanned systems forces. These records came on a day with only 177 combat engagements, well below the recent average—raising an important question about Russia’s slowing pace of territorial advances in 2026.

I also track the overnight drone war. Russia launched 205 UAVs at Ukraine, including 49 jet-powered Shahed-type drones, while an energy strike in Poltava Oblast left 22,000 customers without power. Ukrainian forces reportedly struck Russian UAV infrastructure, command posts, and a depot in occupied territory, alongside reported Su-34 and Su-35 losses. I assess Ukraine’s AI-enabled gun turrets and anti-drone road tunnels against Russia’s evolving defenses, including barrage balloons intended to protect oil refineries from drones.

I examine early reports that Ukraine’s Third Army Corps has cut a Russian salient north of Lyman after a four-month counterattack, reportedly liberating more than 200 square kilometers. If confirmed, this is more than a local map change: it could disrupt or delay Russia’s planned northern Donbas offensive. The timing is notable, as Ukraine says Moscow has moved its deadline to capture all of Donbas from December 31, 2026, to March 31, 2027.

I also cover the major exchange of long-range strikes overnight. Ukrainian drones reportedly struck the Rosneft Saratov refinery—said to process about 4.8 million tons annually—along with UAV launch infrastructure and command posts. Russia’s retaliatory attack on Kyiv and other cities involved drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles; the exact ballistic total remains unclear. I assess reported air-defense interceptions, damage to civilian sites including a Kyiv supermarket and TV studio, and Ukraine’s expanding use of unmanned ground vehicles for logistics and casualty evacuation.

Ukraine’s overnight strike on Moscow appears to have been larger and more successful than early Russian reports suggested. New geolocated flight paths and strike analysis indicate Ukrainian drones penetrated several defensive layers surrounding Moscow before striking oil infrastructure, pumping stations, industrial sites, and logistics targets around the capital. Analysts argue the attack demonstrated that Russia still cannot fully defend Moscow despite concentrating some of its strongest air defenses there. Meanwhile, Russian civilians reacted with growing alarm as drone strikes disrupted daily life near the capital. The attack came as Russia launched another massive wave of missiles and drones against Ukraine, including strikes on residential areas in Dnipro and Odessa that wounded civilians and children. The contrast between Ukrainian strikes on infrastructure targets and Russian strikes on apartment blocks is becoming harder to ignore as the war enters another dangerous phase.
