Today, there are important updates from the Zaporizhia direction.

Here, Russian forces are starting to experiment again with mechanized assaults in the Zaporizhia direction as autumn weather approaches. One of the clearest recent examples came near Vozdvyzhivka, where Russia attempted an armored breakthrough for the first time in almost a year, representing the opening stage of a winter offensive. Capturing Vozdvyzhivka could support further pressure toward Ukrainian positions protecting approaches to Orikhiv, where Russian forces are simultaneously conducting attacks.

The Ukrainian Two-hundred-twenty-fifth Separate Assault Regiment released footage showing the assault, in which two Russian armored vehicles carrying twenty soldiers moved toward Ukrainian positions early in the morning, attempting to exploit reduced visibility.

However, Ukrainian aerial reconnaissance detected the armored group before it reached its objective, and its coordinates were immediately transmitted to strike units. FPV drones, artillery, and heavy bomber drones attacked in succession, immobilizing the vehicles and forcing Russian infantry to dismount. Once dispersed, the soldiers became individual targets for Ukrainian drones before Ukrainian infantry moved forward to confirm the result. As a result, nineteen Russian soldiers were eliminated as soon they stepped out of the vehicles, with only one armored-vehicle driver surrendering, as the assault force was effectively eliminated before being able to reach its destination.

The constant failure of infiltration attacks demonstrates why Russia may increasingly reconsider mechanized operations. Currently small infiltration groups are fundamental to Russian tactics, as one or two soldiers moving on foot are considerably harder for drones to detect than an armored column. But infiltration has an inherent limitation, because accumulating meaningful combat power requires many groups to successfully reach the same area. Even if some break through successfully, Ukrainian drones eliminate isolated soldiers faster than Russia can concentrate them, and they are often left hiding without supplies.

Additional negative factors that make infiltration assaults harder in the coming months is that threes are left without foliage, which gives no cover for infiltrators, and makes them an easy target for the Ukrainian drones operators. At the same time, forcing infiltrators to sit in an unheated position trying to remain undetected for days or weeks at a time just to accumulate enough forces there to push is a recipe for deaths by cold in the harsh winter in Ukraine.

Mechanized assaults reverse that equation, as armored vehicles can deliver ten or twenty soldiers simultaneously, provide protection against small-arms fire and fragmentation, carry heavier equipment, and offer suppressive fire. If they reach their destination successfully using vehicles, infantry can establish a foothold much faster than infiltrators arriving individually.

However, the main weakness of mechanized assaults is visibility, as vehicles produce thermal signatures, noise, and obvious movement patterns. Once reconnaissance drones identify them, artillery, FPV drones, mines, and bomber drones can engage them before infantry reaches any cover. At the same time, using light armored personnel carriers provides speed, but comparatively limited protection against modern drone-delivered explosives.

This makes weather increasingly important, and this is why the Russian command is considering autumn and winter for their mechanized assaults, as fog, low clouds, and strong winds can restrict Ukrainian drone reconnaissance, potentially creating windows for armored movement. Yet the same conditions impair Russian drones, while heavy rain creates mud that slows vehicles and makes their routes predictable and themselves vulnerable.

Overall, the Russian assault on Vozdvyzhivka assault highlights the current tactical dilemma, in which infiltration preserves concealment but struggles to generate concentrated combat power. Mechanized attacks generate that power rapidly but expose it to Ukraine’s reconnaissance-strike system, and this particular attack ended disastrously for Russia. Similar assaults will become more frequent as winter approaches and weather periodically restricts drones. Ukraine, meanwhile, is refining exactly the system designed to stop such attempts: detect the vehicles early, distribute coordinates immediately, strike before infantry can entrench, and confirm destruction afterward, establishing a kill chain that gives the enemy almost no time to deploy.

Press secretary Katie Zacharia is expected to be "transitioning out" of her role with the White House.

In a post on X Friday, Zacharia said:

A suspect was killed after a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, authorities confirmed.

Three children ages 5, 8 and 11 and a teacher were killed in the shooting, police said. Another 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were wounded and were taken to a hospital in critical condition.

On Friday, the suspect was identified as 16-year-old Griffin J. John II.

Today, there is interesting news from inside Russia itself. 

Here, Putin has now signed a decree allowing category D reservists to serve in air defense units in the Russian rear. Extraordinarily, category D reservists include those deemed unfit for military service due to loss of limbs. Soldiers who have lost a leg, arm, or other part of their body, in any way deemed unfit for frontline service, will now be used to operate complex air defense equipment used to take down Ukrainian drones and missiles in the Russian rear. The decree also allows these men to serve in Russian Bars units, officially meant to serve as reservists in the rear, but have been frequently deployed to frontline combat, most notably during the Ukrainian Zaporizhia and Kursk counteroffensives. 

The decree to allow amputees to serve in combat roles either on the frontline or in the rear is reflective of the utmost desperation within the Russian Ministry of Defense, which had appealed to Putin to sign the decree. Russian recruitment numbers are at an all-time low since the full-scale invasion began, while Russian losses are reaching record highs. Most importantly, while Russia is recruiting an average of one-thousand contract soldiers a day, daily Russian losses are reaching an average of one-thousand-three-hundred, resulting in an average recruitment shortage of three-hundred men a day, or nine-thousand men each month. 

Experts believe that after the upcoming Russian parliamentary elections on the twentieth of September this year, Putin will announce a new wave of mobilization. While the legitimacy of Russian elections is frequently cast into doubt by accusations of corruption and fraud, they continue to be a historic primer for civil unrest and political protests. After the last Russian mobilization caused major unrest in itself, Putin fears he needs to delay the official announcement of the next round till after the elections, to avoid the two mutually reinforcing each other and cause civil unrest to become unmanageable. Still, major Russian media channels are already psychologically preparing the Russian public for a new round of mobilization, discussing why it is necessary and how it would solve the problems causing the lack of results in Russia’s special military operation. 

Still, it is important to note that Russian mobilization never officially ended after Putin first announced it in September of two-thousand-twenty-two. After meeting the stated goal of three-hundred-thousand new recruits, the efforts took a quieter and more clandestine role; using deceptive practices like offering students rear-area or technical jobs only to send them to assault roles instead; making foreigners who do not speak Russian sign work or residency contracts that later turn out to be defense contracts; all the way to straight-up beatings and torture of young men doing their obligatory year of military service to force them to sign full service contracts with the army. Most notably, military analysts report that while Russian recruitment initially mainly relied on the high signing bonuses, which currently stand at thirty-thousand euros, it has increasingly been forced to rely on forced methods such as these instead; with recruiters having recently begun raiding factory floors to arrest workers, and then forcing them to sign contracts under threat of beatings for being cowards or being pro-Ukraine. These tactics become even more abhorrent when understanding that the average time between a soldier signing a contract with the Russian army and being killed in Ukraine currently stands at ten to twenty days; a process that is now widely documented and followed through Russian soldiers’ social media activity and them going offline for good. 

Overall, while Russian mobilization never formally ended, a new official announcement will allow the already aggressive recruitment practices to take place more in the open, and at a much larger scale. The practice of now allowing actual amputees to serve in reservist and air defense units will not just result in obvious failed performances against Ukrainian drone and missile attacks on the Russian rear, but it is also a sign of how desperate the situation has grown for Putin, seeking to bridge the gap till elections are concluded, with the Russian military trying to crawl itself past the finish line, but now with arms and legs missing.

After recent offensive action in the Dnipropetrovsk sector, Ukraine's Skala special assault Regiment achieved a massive breakthrough and cleared seventy-five square kilometers of the grey zone, while pushing Russia's area of control back significantly further. The regiment reports that this is one of the most significant offensive operations by Ukrainian forces this summer. They report that Russian defenders in the sector have suffered a critical number of casualties, as well as losing several key deployment points and access routes necessary for their continued operations in the area.

This massive operation began shortly after Ukrainians already advanced over four-hundred square kilometers in the area earlier this year. After Russian lines broke, their high command urgently redeployed a significant number of forces to halt the Ukrainian advances; one of which was the one-hundred-twentieth Marine Infantry Brigade, along with even the full ninetieth Russian tank division, numbering an estimated total of over thirty-thousand enemy soldiers. Because of these reinforcements, Ukraine's advance was forced to halt, as any attack against such an overwhelming force would have been disastrous; So, the Skala special assault regiment had to find a way to remove the Russian equipment and marines from the equation, and allow Ukrainians to continue retaking the initiative.

This is why Ukrainian drone operators started the three-day-long Ashan operation, which was a larger concentrated drone campaign aiming to destroy Russian heavy equipment, as you may remember from a previous report. Among the targets were artillery pieces, such as the North Korean Koksan self-propelled artillery system, which deprived the arriving Russian soldiers of fire support that could have been used against advancing Ukrainian soldiers. After that, Ukrainian drones started targeting armored personnel carriers, which reduced their mobility. Then, Ukraine struck Russian soldiers to reduce the Russians’ manpower before they could be sent to the frontline to stop the Ukrainian advance. To disrupt the logistics of the already present enemy soldiers along the front, Ukrainian operators struck multiple Russian military trucks as well, simultaneously denying supplies and reinforcements for the Russians. As a result of the Ashan operation in this sector, Ukrainian drones destroyed one hundred and seven pieces of equipment in just three days and removed a substantial part of Russia’s firepower, transport, and logistics supporting the marine reinforcements.

To defend their land-based logistical routes before advancing, Ukraine has installed forty-two kilometers of anti-drone protection along roads in the Dnipropetrovsk region. These anti-drone nets allowed ammunition, reinforcements, and assault groups to move through the rear without every convoy being exposed to Russian FPV drones, while Russian equipment and supply traffic had been devastated. After these preparations, dozens of assault groups launched a simultaneous offensive from the Velykomykhailivka area with round-the-clock drone support. The Skala regiment first pushed through Ternovate and, after clearing it, moved towards the south, supporting the southern vector. Along this route, Ukrainian assault troops pushed towards Zaporizke and secured the right flank of the attack towards Ternove. At the same time, Ukraine expanded the breach north of these villages and captured Sichneve. This allowed the Ukrainians to use it as a springboard and advance even further eastward and attack Maliivka.

During the operation, Ukrainian reconnaissance drones identified Russian positions and targeted them with artillery, suppressing known firing positions before Ukrainian assault groups entered the settlements. This attack was further supported by FPV drones, which struck Russian soldiers who tried to hide after the artillery barrage. Additionally, heavy bomber drones attacked the scattered Russian soldiers by dropping ordnance on them. Russia tried to send reinforcements, but their armored vehicles were destroyed on the move by drones, eliminating them before they could help the defending Russians.

As a result of the attacks, Ukraine erased the Russian line as they advanced up to ten kilometers into Russian-held territory, liberating seventy-five square kilometers. This enabled Ukrainian forces to extend the reach of their drone operations and establish fire control over key Russian logistics routes in this sector.

This is what happened to Russia’s one hundred and twentieth Marine Infantry Brigade, which served as a reinforcement and suffered critical losses, rendering it combat ineffective. This forced the surviving elements to withdraw from the Dnipropetrovsk region, which is exactly what Ukraine needs to continue offensive operations
