The U.S. and Israel launched strikes on Tehran, as President Donald Trump said the U.S. was starting major combat operations against Iran. Witnesses reported smoke near offices tied to Iran’s supreme leader on Saturday, and residents hear heavy explosions across the capital. Later, Trump said “most” of Iran’s senior leadership is “gone,” including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and many people who make decisions. Trump had accused Iran of continuing to pursue nuclear work and missile development. Iran said it had not enriched uranium since June, but it has blocked international inspectors from bombed sites.
Iranian-American activist and CBS News contributor Masih Alinejad said Iranians are experiencing a range of emotions, including hope and concern, after U.S. and Israel launched a major operation against Iran. She added Iranians are concerned the attack won't lead to regime change, which she says is a "huge risk for people inside Iran." Israel has confirmed that Iran’s supreme leader was killed in strikes on Saturday, according to two Israeli sources familiar with the matter. One of the sources said Israel had obtained a photo of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s dead body. The second source said an official announcement is being prepared.
Earlier in the evening, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there are many signs that Khamenei is “no longer with us.”
Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman said that Iran’s president and Supreme Leader are “safe and sound.” But Khamenei has not been seen in public or in videos since the strikes began.
