A deadly confrontation between members of Ukraine’s Security Service and Defense Intelligence erupted in broad daylight in Kyiv, leaving one GUR member dead and two wounded. In this update, I break down Witkoff’s extraordinary opening remarks to Putin, including a translation nuance that quickly drew attention in Russian media. I also examine Yuri Ushakov’s account of the closed-door meeting and dinner, where Putin presented the Russian version of the battlefield, repeated Moscow’s demand to address the so-called “root causes” of the war, and pushed propaganda claims about Ukraine.

Vladimir Putin used a bizarre killer-whale-and-polar-bear analogy while speaking to students—and then connected that “food chain” directly to Russia’s war against Ukraine. But Putin’s rhetoric is only one part of a much larger warning emerging from Russia and Eastern Europe.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says the next seven to eight months could be critical for Ukraine, Poland, and the entire region. He warns that Russia appears to be preparing for escalation and cites assessments that Moscow may seek to mobilize another 600,000 soldiers. The Kremlin has now publicly responded after the CIA director’s trip to Moscow—and Dmitry Peskov’s message was unmistakable: Russia says its offensive continues, negotiations over Ukraine are “deeply on pause,” and Moscow claims the battlefield remains in its favor.

Ukraine is mourning after a devastating day of Russian strikes. In Kryvyi Rih, the confirmed toll from the attack on a shopping mall rose to 15 killed and 130 injured, including 23 children. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack and said Ukraine will respond.
The violence extended beyond Kryvyi Rih. A drone struck a minibus in Zaporizhzhia, while a Shahed attack on a multipurpose building in Tokarivka in the Mykolaiv region killed four people, including three boys. Garry Kasparov is asking the question NATO still hasn’t answered: if Western forces could help shoot down Iranian missiles headed for Israel, why not Russian missiles headed for Ukraine?
That question comes as Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warns that if Russia reaches a survival-level crisis, Moscow could turn to whatever “last resort” it has available.

Major changes may be coming inside Kyiv as President Zelenskyy returns from Paris—but the biggest names and positions remain unconfirmed.
Greg breaks down reports of a wartime leadership shake-up involving Mikhail Fedorov, Oleksandr Syrskyi, Kyrylo Budanov, Ukraine’s prime minister, and key defense, energy, and foreign-policy positions. Ukraine has also extended martial law and mobilization for another 90 days.

Russia’s latest strikes on Ukraine killed 16 people and wounded nearly 50, while President Zelenskyy says Ukraine will answer with a justified and decisive response. In this update, I break down what happened, why Ukraine’s current long-range operations are not yet the promised retaliation, and why the continuing shortage of Patriot interceptors remains so dangerous.
We also look at a major new threat from North Korea: the KN-30 heavy ballistic missile, which Ukrainian defense intelligence reports can carry a warhead of up to 2.5 tons and reach roughly 900 kilometers. I also examine Russia’s missile stockpiles and production as Ukraine faces the continuing challenge of defending its cities from ballistic attacks.
