Trump's 500 Patriot Missile Deal Could Still Work—But Only If...

I examine the U.S.-approved possible $2.1 billion sale of 500 PAC-3 MSE Patriot interceptors to Ukraine, paid for by partners including Canada, Germany, and Norway. The central problem is timing: these newly produced interceptors are not expected to arrive until after 2030, while Ukraine says it needs roughly 100 Patriot interceptors per month for the 2026–27 winter and to defend against Russian ballistic attacks.

I also look at Zelensky’s practical proposal for allies with PAC-3 stockpiles to transfer interceptors now and replenish their arsenals later through this production contract. Beyond Patriot, I discuss Firepoint’s claimed 300-km FP7 capability against mobile Iskander launchers and its longer-range FP9 program. Finally, I assess the wider political stakes: U.S. pressure on Kyiv’s refinery strikes, the diesel deal, Lavrov’s reception at the G20, Russian mobilization, and whether Washington is imposing meaningful costs on Moscow.
