Russia's Economy Is Barely Hanging On—Even With Trump's Lifeline
I examine the mounting strains across Russia’s wartime economy, from construction-company liquidations and frozen accounts to rising oil-export freight and insurance costs. Tanker costs from Novorossiysk reportedly surged as Black Sea risk premiums climbed, while Urals export volumes fell. Russia is also seeking costly workarounds for grain exports: shipments through Murmansk require rail transport from southern Russia, adding an estimated $18–$25 per ton.
I also assess record farm debt, losses among coal producers, drone-related damage to major businesses, delayed Defense Ministry payments, and the pressure on consumer prices. Higher projected Urals revenue gives Moscow some breathing room, but it does not eliminate the accumulating costs of transport disruption, debt, insurance, and wartime spending. Finally, I look at Ukraine’s reported October 30 strike on a refinery in Russia’s Samara region—and why continued refinery strikes could compound these economic vulnerabilities.
