Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner went to Moscow for more than three hours of talks with Vladimir Putin—and what happened inside the Kremlin raises serious questions about how the Trump administration’s envoys are approaching Russia and the war against Ukraine.
In this update, I break down Witkoff’s extraordinary opening remarks to Putin, including a translation nuance that quickly drew attention in Russian media. I also examine Yuri Ushakov’s account of the closed-door meeting and dinner, where Putin presented the Russian version of the battlefield, repeated Moscow’s demand to address the so-called “root causes” of the war, and pushed propaganda claims about Ukraine.
The talks also went beyond Ukraine. According to the Russian account, the two sides discussed potential large-scale Russian-American economic projects. Witkoff and Kushner then left Moscow for Kyiv, where they are expected to meet Ukrainian leaders and hear directly about the reality of Russia’s war.
The central question now is whether Ukraine can challenge the narrative these American envoys heard in Moscow—and whether their visit to Kyiv changes how they understand Putin’s demands and Russia’s conduct of the war.

Vladimir Putin used a bizarre killer-whale-and-polar-bear analogy while speaking to students—and then connected that “food chain” directly to Russia’s war against Ukraine. But Putin’s rhetoric is only one part of a much larger warning emerging from Russia and Eastern Europe.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says the next seven to eight months could be critical for Ukraine, Poland, and the entire region. He warns that Russia appears to be preparing for escalation and cites assessments that Moscow may seek to mobilize another 600,000 soldiers. At the same time, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says there are no grounds for improved relations with NATO or the European Union and accuses Europe of mobilizing its military potential against Russia.
We also examine the devastating explosion near Kyiv that killed 37 people. President Zelenskyy acknowledged that a major ammunition storage facility was located where it “definitely should not have been” and promised a full investigation. Finally, we look at Putin’s meeting with Alexander Lukashenko and a serious strategic problem facing Washington: reports that U.S. missile and air-defense inventories have been heavily depleted by transfers to the Middle East, potentially complicating American contingency planning in Europe and Asia.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued one of Ukraine’s most direct warnings yet about the growing danger inside Russian airspace: the “safe days for Russia’s skies are over.” Zelenskyy says Ukraine is not threatening civilian aviation, but warns that increasing Ukrainian drone and missile operations against Russian military targets and the war economy are making Russian airspace increasingly unsafe.
The warning comes alongside a broader escalation in rhetoric between Kyiv and Moscow. Zelenskyy said the United States asked Ukraine to refrain from strikes on Moscow and St. Petersburg from August 25–27, a request Ukraine complied with while Russian attacks continued. Kyrylo Budanov reinforced Zelenskyy’s warning, saying Ukraine will deliver a harsh and proportionate response and that international airlines, insurers, and partners should recognize the new reality in Russian airspace.
Vladimir Putin responded by calling Zelenskyy’s warning a declaration of “state terrorism” and said Russia would respond if a tragedy occurred. Putin also claimed Ukrainian attacks had targeted three Russian nuclear power plants and announced orders for massive strikes against Ukraine’s energy facilities and infrastructure. I examine what Russia is claiming, what Ukraine is actually saying, and why the possibility of propaganda or a false-flag narrative must be watched carefully.

Russia may be preparing for another major mobilization—and inside Russia, the warning signs are getting harder to ignore.
In this update, we go inside Russia to examine a military enlistment notice received by a 38-year-old Russian, damage at a Wildberries facility in the Tula region, and a growing queue at a Moscow Rosneft gas station. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Ukrainian intelligence has confirmed Russian preparations for a new mobilization after parliamentary elections, potentially involving several hundred thousand additional Russians.

After the Trump-Putin call and a full day of statements from Moscow, NATO, Germany, Ukraine, and the United States, the direction of this war is becoming harder to ignore: serious officials are now openly preparing for a conflict that could continue for months—and potentially years.
In this update, I break down Yuri Ushakov’s account of the Trump-Putin conversation, Dmitry Peskov’s insistence that Russia still intends to achieve the goals of its so-called “special military operation,” and Moscow’s apparent belief that winter pressure could weaken Ukraine. At the same time, Britain and Germany are moving additional air-defense support toward Ukraine as Russia intensifies attacks on critical infrastructure.
Germany’s Boris Pistorius warns that Russian air raids could increase as temperatures fall. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte calls on allies to dig deeper, while U.S. Undersecretary Elbridge Colby delivers one of the clearest statements of the day: the West must be prepared for a protracted conflict and for Ukraine’s requirements to continue for months and years ahead.
