Trump Pressures Zelensky—Then Sends Witkoff to Putin

Trump is pressuring Zelensky to accept a peace agreement, while Steve Witkoff prepares to carry the proposal to Vladimir Putin in Moscow. But why is Washington demanding concessions from Ukraine rather than Russia?

Today, October 20, Zelensky heads to Oslo for negotiations with American representatives. I examine the reported peace proposals, the territorial concessions being discussed, and the growing concern that Ukraine could be pressured into surrendering strategically vital territory without adequate security guarantees.

I also examine Vice President JD Vance's demand that Ukraine stop striking Russian energy facilities, Senator Thom Tillis's warnings about restrictions on Ukrainian defenses and intelligence, and General Wesley Clark's suggestion that Trump's Russia policy may be connected to his objectives concerning Iran.

Finally, I explore a larger strategic question: Is Trump attempting a Nixon-Mao-style realignment with Russia, and does Moscow have any reason to abandon its longstanding view of the United States as a strategic adversary?

The central question is whether the United States is negotiating a durable peace or putting pressure on the invaded country while offering Russia economic and geopolitical incentives.
