در روستایی که مردم به لباس پاره، فقر و بدهی دیگران می‌خندیدند، حاجی قدیر با غرور ادعا کرد هیچ‌کس نمی‌تواند خنده تمسخر را از صورت مردم پاک کند.

اما ملا نصرالدین با یک تصمیم عجیب، همه را به میدان روستا کشاند؛ جایی که یک خر پیر قاضی شد و پاکتی سرخ‌رنگ راز سال‌ها ظلم، دروغ و حق‌کشی را آشکار کرد.

مردمی که برای خندیدن آمده بودند، در سکوت فرو رفتند.
آبروی یک پیرزن بازگشت.
حق یک کشاورز زحمتکش برگردانده شد.
و پسری که سال‌ها از بدهی پدرش شرمنده بود، دوباره سربلند شد.

این حکایت پندآموز یادمان می‌دهد که نباید به درد و فقر دیگران خندید؛ چون گاهی حقیقت از جایی بیرون می‌آید که هیچ‌کس انتظارش را ندارد.
